Choose the decision zones

Place the keep zone farthest from the door, the move zone beside it, and the remove zone closest to the exit when the unit layout allows. Leave one clear walking lane. Do not use a fourth “maybe” pile unless you give it a firm deadline.

Work in visible slices

Begin at the door and finish one shelf, wall section or stack at a time. Opening every box at once creates loose items and hides the floor. Photograph labels before moving a stack if the order matters.

Flag restricted material

Set leaking, sharp, chemical, medical or unidentified material aside without mixing it into ordinary trash. Ask the storage facility and the removal provider how those items must be handled.

Build the pickup note

List the unit size, floor or building, largest items, number of bags or boxes, gate instructions, elevator details and the deadline for returning the empty unit. That note gives a provider something concrete to review.

Take this checklist to the unit

  • Mark keep, move and remove zones
  • Keep the doorway and aisle clear
  • Count bulky furniture and appliances
  • Separate restricted or leaking items
  • Confirm gate, elevator and access hours
  • Photograph the final remove group

For service-specific boundaries and estimate details, review Storage Unit Cleanout or prepare a direct contact note.

Safety sources

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises checking local programs for household hazardous waste rather than mixing paints, solvents, batteries or compressed-gas tanks into ordinary disposal. OSHA recommends clear aisles and suitable handling equipment for moving materials. See EPA household hazardous waste guidance and OSHA warehousing guidance.
